How to Fix an Unraveled Cigar

Imagine the disappointment: One gets home with their prized cigar, they pull out their lighter, sit down in their favorite chair and unwrap the cigar only to find that the wrapper has come undone. Fortunately, this situation is not nearly as dire as it seems. If one has never dealt with it before, they will soon have in their hands the materials to deal with such mishaps.

If the unraveled portion is not too far up the barrel of the cigar, one may use their trimmers to cut that section off and begin smoking at a stable section of the wrapper. Some lighters, such as several Lotus lighter models and other high-end manufacturer’s products, come with cutters attached. This is sometimes wasteful, however, and it’s oftentimes best to save as much of the cigar as possible.

To repair this cigar, one must journey no farther than their local grocery store. There is a natural glue called pectin which is used for this process. Remember to never use a chemical glue when trying to repair a cigar! The fumes can be quite toxic. If the frayed portion of the cigar is near the foot or the cap, one may attempt to trim it back to a more advantageous portion of the wrapper but real pros get the most out of their cigars and that means making a repair.

Pectin is sold as a powder, usually in the canning section of the grocery store. This glue is natural and there is no reason to worry about it flavoring the tobacco when it is used for the repair. One must never use any other type of glue. Even ”non-toxic” glues can become very toxic when they combust and will certainly flavor the tobacco in a very undesirable way, to say nothing of the health risks of smoking something so unnatural.

That’s about all that’s involved in repairing a cigar. Before heading off to the store, make certain to put the cigar in its original packaging so that the wrapper doesn’t fall apart any more than it already has and so that no more filler material is lost. Using this method, just about any cigar mishap can be handled with ease. This will happen from time to time. Cigars are hand-made products and, as such, there are bound to be flaws. Most often, however, that hand made quality results in their typically very high-quality and, of course, the excellent flavor that results from a good wrap!
